Miscellaneous Health Tips

A new year. A fresh start. A NEW YOU! The next chapter in the story of your life. It is all up to you. Catch your breath and focus on your future with some miscellaneous tips that might put you on the road to better health.

ANTIBIOTICS – kill friendly flora in your gut. This can result in depression, anxiety, inflammation, and memory loss, to name just a few health issues.

STRESS – decreases immune system productivity, and disrupts gut microbes.

Image result for FREE pics of germsWhat is a microbe? My medical dictionary tells us the Greek derivation means small. It is a minute one-celled form of life not distinguishable as to its vegetable or animal nature. It is bacteriagerms producing fermentation, putrefaction, and disease. When I was young I had a book called ‘The Adventures of Jimmy Microbe’. It had stories in it that taught children about good health habits. That is how I learned about germs, the ‘good’ ones and the ‘bad’ ones.

SUGAR – impairs memory and learning ability. Artificial sweeteners can cause obesity.

PROBIOTICS – there is a lot of talk today about Probiotics, but do you know why? The Mayo Clinic tells us that scientific research shows that having too many of the ‘bad’ and not enough of the ‘good’ bacteria – caused in part by an unhealthy diet – can cause havoc on all the systems of your body – leading to the chemical balance being disrupted – which can lead to weight gain, skin problems, constipation, diarrhea, and many other chronic health issues. Probiotics are, “good bacteria that are either the same as or very similar to the bacteria that are already in your body.” (good Jimmy Microbes). They go on to say that “your lower digestive tract alone teems with a complex and diverse community of these bacteria.” And, that ‘factually there are a greater number of bacteria in your intestines than there are cells in your body.’ So, why “Probiotic” supplementation? Probiotic supplements are live microorganisms that can provide good health benefits when consumed, by restoring the balance of the friendly bacteria in the digestive system. Aside from the store-bought version – they can best be eaten the old fashion way (like in the picture).

Did you know only 1% of the genetic material in your body is your own? The rest belong to the 2000 different microbe species that live on and in you. (from Microbiome’s by the “Human Microbiome Project”. What they found is that your body of 30 trillion cells is home to 100 trillion microbes and 10 trillion of those little guys live in your gut! The Quantum Wellness Botanical Institute suggest that good bacteria, called microbiomes, during a person’s lifetime are disturbed, minimized or killed. Diseases now being linked to disturbances in the gut/stomach include; diabetes, obesity, heart disease, autoimmune diseases, Rheumatoid arthritis, MS, MD, fibromyalgia, allergies/asthma, and depression/anxiety, etc.

Did you know  – BLEACH was invented in the late 1940’s? It’s chlorine, folks! And it was used to kill our troops. PEROXIDE was invented during WWI in the 1920’s. It was used to save and help cleanse the needs of our troops and hospitals. Uses for peroxide (Hydrogen Peroxide 3%) include: rinsing the mouth out daily to avoid canker sores, and have cleaner whiter teeth: Use instead of mouthwash – one capful (the cap that is on the bottle) will do the job; clean your toothbrush; clean your counter tops to kill germs; pour on cutting board after cleaning to kill salmonella and bacteria; spray a 50/50 mix of peroxide to water and spray on feet to get rid of fungus; the same mix in a spray bottle will keep the bathroom disinfected; spray into nostrils when you have a cold or plugged sinus. Hold in for a few minutes and then blow your nose; put 1/2 bottle in your bath water to help get rid of boils, fungus, or other skin infections; add 1 cup instead of bleach to a load of whites in your laundry to whiten them; I use peroxide to clean my mirrors – there is no smearing.

NUMBNESS – and TINGLING in the extremities (arms, legs, hands, feet, fingers, toes, etc.) This feeling may be experienced by everyone. Not a fun feeling to have. The Home Health site among others tell us that Numbness and Tingling in the extremities can be caused by a number of conditions to include pressure on the spine or peripheral nerves, atherosclerosis, nerve damage or injury, and even insect or animal bites. Also, abnormal levels of calcium, sodium and potassium can be the cause. (In this case, I conclude that a person could be underdosing or overdosing on these supplements). Neuropathy – usually peripheral neuropathy, a nerve condition is usually caused by diabetes, and/or nutritional imbalances, infections and autoimmune disorders. When numbness/tingling is felt in the arm/hand, you can also add carpal tunnel syndrome as a cause. Vascular damage, cancer, chronic inflammation, kidney, blood or liver disease, alcoholism, exposure to toxins such as arsenic, mercury, lead and thallium are, as well causes for numbness and tingling in the extremities. Insect caused numbness can result in infections caused by ticks such as Lyme disease, and as well, herpes, shingles and HIV. If you experience any of the symptoms mentioned above, consult your family physician. Numbness is not to be ignored, as it can indicate many issues other than those mentioned.

IMMUNE SUPPORT – on the lighter side Black Elderberry is full of antioxidants that are beneficial in supporting the immune system and preventing sickness. Check with your local Health Food Store for more information.

I hope you learned something new – PASS IT ON!

Hair Loss

Image result for free pics of hairLife is a road of continuing education. A section of that road for me has been the field of Cosmetology. It didn’t surprise me when I was asked to blog about Hair Loss.

We all have hair, or not – but what is hair? The Webster’s Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary describes hair as “a slender thread like outgrowth of the epidermis of an animal, mammal, human head.” The standard text-book of Cosmetology describes hair as “an appendage of the skin. It is a slender, thread-like outgrowth of the skin and scalp of the human body.” It goes on to tell us that there is no sense of feeling in the hair of the head or body, due to the absence of nerves in the hair. And, that the chief purposes of the hair are adornment and protection of the head from heat, cold and injury.

This all sounds good to me. However, humans tend to abuse their hair. They perm it, color it, bleach it, and men just plain shave it off if that is the fad of the day or year.

Hair is composed of a protein called keratin. Hair varies in color. Hair has a root – found beneath the skin surface and is enclosed within the follicle. The part of hair that extends above the skin is called the hair shaft. There are other terminologies used to describe hair – such as oily hair, dry hair, hair structure, long hair, short hair, bristly, soft, coarse hair, and etc., but that could take me all day to write about. The question I am trying to address is ‘hair loss’.

Image result for free pics of female hair loss

To understand ‘hair loss’, you need to understand hair growth. I tell my clients that if the hair is normal and healthy, each individual hair goes through a steady and continual cycle of growth, fall and replacement. Natural hair loss occurs usually in the spring and in the fall. Healthy hair is determined by the persons diet, blood circulation, emotional disturbances, endocrine glands, lymph system, kidney filtration, Adrenal glands, too much acid in the body, because of the foods you eat, drugs being taken for various health issues, hair treatments, and etc.

The formation and growth of hair cells depend upon proper nourishment and oxygen which only the blood stream can supply making the function of blood indispensable to the health and life of hair. When you are healthy, the hair flourishes. When you are ill or have any kind of health issue, the hair weakens and as with other vital organs eventually dies causing ‘hair loss’.

Clients tell me “my hair didn’t grow much this month, my hair really grew a lot, my hair didn’t grow at all.” And then ask me why? The normal hair growth per month should be one-half inch. Basically, hair growth can be influenced by seasons of the year, nutrition, hormones, and climatic conditions. Hair growth is not influenced by the way it is cut, the application of ointments, shampoo, conditioners, etc. Hair does not grow after a person dies.

So, what about ‘hair loss’. A certain amount of hair is shed daily. This is natures way to make way for new hair to come in. Dogs shed, cats shed, birds molt, other animals shed. Why wouldn’t humans shed. If the hair was pulled out by the roots, it would grow back. However, there is a part  beneath the root called the papilla from which what is needed for the growth of the hair comes. Should the papilla be destroyed, it will never grow hair again. New hair is formed by cell division, from the growing point at the root of the hair around the papilla. Now the question should be what destroys the papilla?  The answer – dis-ease, or diseases in and on a not so healthy body.

There is no one answer that fits all. Dis-ease is different in everyone. As I study the body the same things I talk about in my blog when it comes to diseases of any kind can be an influence on hair loss. These include: Dermatitis – an inflammatory condition of the skin; Eczema – a more acute inflammation of the skin; Psoriasis – cause unknown; Herpes simplex – again, the origin is unknown; Alopecia – of which there are many different types to include senilis (old age baldness – permanent), prematura (a slow thinning process before middle age – in this type the new hairs coming in are weaker ones), areata (the sudden falling out of hair in patches) – causes can be anemia, scarlet fever, syphilis, or the nervous system being compromised. New to some of you, but not to others, contagious disorders such as parasitic infections (ringworm – all types, mites, head lice, inflammation anywhere in the body for any reason, and staphylococci infections can be causes for hair loss. Other causes can include dandruff – long neglected dandruff often leads to permanent hair loss (baldness). Dandruff is waste trying to get out of the skin which is acidic; pulling long hair back on the head to make pony tails; tight braids; use of elastic bands; extensions; wearing of wigs on a regular basis smothers the root which needs air to grow, the result – thinning hair; and even the use of hair rollers.

Last but not least, especially today, is the taking of prescription medications for various health issues. When I got my cosmetology license in 1979, medications taken the most were over the counter drugs, penicillin and the sulfa drug. As the years have progressed, the list has had phenomenal growth, not just for drugs, but diseases. Every drug on the market today has an effect on not only the part of the body that is diseased, but on all the other organs of the body as well. These medications, which include all chemo therapy, have contra-indications which affect the whole body which is made up of millions of cells – some of which make up our hair. Is it not reasonable to say that one’s health affects one’s loss of hair. With everyone’s physical and chemical makeup being different, everyone experiences different reactions to the medications, foods, drinks and/or anything else put into or onto their bodies.

What about genetics – people ask? European researchers chalk ‘male pattern baldness up to genetics – saying “mothers may unwittingly put their sons on the path to baldness.” (from the maternal grandfather). It is called ‘androgenetic alopecia – which is related to male sex hormones. This is only one factor that may be the cause of hair loss. Male pattern baldness is usually accompanied by dandruff (see above paragraph). Again, dandruff is the skin trying to get rid of waste material on it, and in it, which is very acidic. Dandruff is a symptom of something more serious – usually lymph system issues, kidney filtration not working properly, adrenal gland failure, etc. all caused by too much acid in the body.

Genetics only play a part in the natural loss of hair which is gradual as you age. In summary sources of hair loss definitely include: health issues, stress, medications, and etc.

Quoting from ‘The Detox Miracle Sourcebook’ by Robert Morse, N.D.
“Your hair is little different from any other tissue in the body, requiring virtually the same elements for growth and repair. Since the hair is second most metabolically active tissue in your body, it can be used as a “record” of metabolic activity. An inch or so of your hair can give you a good picture of the last two months or so of your body’s metabolic activity. As it grows, it “locks in” the history of intra’and extra-cellular metabolic activity.” In other words, your hair is the history of your body’s health – to include your hairs health. “Hair analysis is more reliable than blood analysis in indicating tissue (cellular) level utilization, storage and excretory factors.” Hair, therefore, can be contaminated by hair treatment products, such as dyes, bleaches, and shampoos, and I will add conditioners, oils, hair sprays, etc. This is in opposition to what I said before, which is what we were taught 35 or more years ago. I know, I am allergic to all the hair care products that I put on my hair or put on clients – but then, how do you steer clear of using them? You use natural or organically produced products – which are available, but are hard to find because there are too few.

The cellular level is where it is all happening folks. The hair is very sensitive to everything you do to your body. You need the correct nourishment, to include vitamins, minerals, amino acids, etc. to aid in having and maintaining a healthy growth of hair. You need to understand the systemic conditions of your body, and fix them. Detoxification (ridding the body of toxins), can drastically change the condition of the hair. It will bring the body’s chemistry back into balance by removing the toxic metals, elements and substances that don’t belong there. A fruit diet is a good start, along with herbal formula supplements.

Recently, the latest ‘scientific information’ claims hair loss can be fixed with stem cell re-nourishing products. I checked out the product and you can try it for around $99 per hair spray can size container. But know that without continual use, your hair loss will come right back. The same happens with the use of other hair growth products.

In summary – These are the facts as I see them. I cannot tell you what to do as you are all different genetically, chemically, and reactionary to life in general. It is up to each of you to determine what might be the cause of your loss of hair, and how much you are willing to do, and to pay, to get your hair back.

Health Tips – Tobacco

Image result for free pics of anything related to smokingWhat Do You Know – about Tobacco Related Dis-ease, or diseases?

The government claims that approximately 480,00 people die each year as a result of cigarette smoking. The lists are numerous as to what diseases are the result of cigarette smoking. But what doesn’t the government and tobacco industry tell you?

If you are a smoker or a non-smoker, but are exposed to secondhand smoke, the following information should peak your interest.

The New England Journal of Medicine conducted a study. Here are some of the results of that study.

It is important to note that insidious diseases that kill smokers and former smokers long after they quit, can cause genetic changes that manifest decades later as a lethal disease.’

Diseases that are recognized by the Government and medical system that are a result of the use of tobacco in any form and especially cigarette smoking include:

  • Esophageal cancer
  • Ischemic heart disease
  • Diabetes
  • Stroke (total)
  • Pancreatic cancer
  • Urinary bladder cancer
  • Atherosclerosis
  • Aortic aneurysm
  • Pneumonia, influenza, TB
  • COPD2
  • Colorectal cancer
  • Lip/oral cancer
  • Liver cancer
  • Lung cancer

Diseases that are not on the list of recognized illnesses by the government and medical system as being related to or the cause of death by the use of tobacco or cigarettes, include:

  • Kidney Failure
  • Immune system suppression
  • Atherosclerosis
  • Platelet aggregation (related to the blood)
  • Inflammation
  • Gene Alterations
  • All infections (to include flu/common cold)
  • Hypertensive Heart Disease
  • Intestinal Ischemia
  • Prostate Cancer
  • Breast Cancer
  • Liver Cirrhosis
  • Respiratory Issues
  • Rare cancers
  • Digestive Diseases
  • Acute Mycloid Leukemia
  • Peptic Ulcers
  • Bowel Obstructions
  • Gallstones
  • Diverticulitis
  • Acute pancreatitis
  • Gastric hemorrhage

There you have it – in a nut shell. Cigarette smoking is the most prominent cause of death and disability, all of which are ‘PREVENTABLE’.

This kind of information appalls me. In the first place, the big question in regards to smoking, is WHY? Why would a person want to jeopardize their whole life for what they feel is a pleasure and claim it is not an addiction – a serious addiction, even though it may take a long time to manifest the results of the choice made. WHAT CAN BE DONE ABOUT IT?

Image result for free pics of anything related to smoking

The list of what can be done, is being done. Everyone has been given ‘free agency’ by God, to do what they want with their lives. The government steps in to make us think that they care. However, in the long run, it is the money to be made by the tobacco industry that counts – not my opinion, or yours.

Do you know?

Image result for free pics of anything related to smoking

Sounding like a broken record – you as parents, me, family doctors, anyone who really cares need to discourage the use of tobacco in any form. It can start in your own family. When it comes to teenagers, tell them to not use tobacco and especially now days, to not use,or try the E cigarette (another subject that needs to be addressed, but not in this blog). Educate them as to the results such a choice may cause.  Remind them that once addicted, a smoker craves a new cigarette as often as every 30 minutes. That is a difficult schedule to meet, today, where smoking is prohibited almost every where.

In addition to children, teenagers, anyone who has the wish to smoke or use tobacco, should be educated on Nicotine – the damaging chemical that is what tobacco users become addicted to. Do you know that nicotine addicts spend most of their day suffering the miseries of unfulfilled cravings. Smokers who try to stop smoking suffer withdrawal agonies for weeks. I know people who have experienced this. However, many eventually succumb to temptation from any direction where they see cigarettes or smell cigarette smoke.

Aggressive efforts need to be applied to help improve the health of countless people. Discontinuing the sale of cigarettes in retail stores and pharmacies would help, but only minimally. And, that is not about to happen because, once again, it is all about the money to be made by the big industries. The government adding on more taxes doesn’t seem to help, just as it doesn’t help to keep people from buying alcoholic beverages (another addiction). It is funny how Medicare will help pay medical expenses for people with addictions (adding on to the cost of healthcare costs), but won’t help pay the expenses incurred for senior citizens who can’t see or hear.

In my research, it seems other countries are more successful with their efforts in reducing tobacco consumption than the U.S. In spite of all the strategies here in the U.S. to reduce smoking, such as warning mandates, tax hikes, and smoke-free zones, statistically, “one out of six Americans is a smoker, and one out of five smokers has a disability.”

What can you do?  Use your common sense folks. Think about how your actions may be, or are affecting the people around you – especially your wives, husbands, and children, co-workers, friends etc. who are not tobacco users or smokers. Think about how your addiction is affecting your health. Think, does smoking really help you lose weight – an excuse used by many women (especially) – for years. Think, does it reduce your anxiety, fears, worries, make you feel good, make you feel you are now part of the ‘in crowd’, look sexy – as the movies seems to make it look (especially back in the good old days). Think, does smoking improve your life style, improve your hygiene? Think again, in reality, smokers cannot effectively camouflage the smell of cigarette smoke in clothes, the house, or your hair, the taste in the mouth, the smell on the breath, the effect of decay on the teeth, fingernails, toenails, and the list can go on and on.

Image result for free pics of anything related to smokingIt may be difficult, but suffering the agony associated with quitting may be worth it. Remove yourself from being a burden to your family, your friends, the government and the insurance companies.

Image result for free pics of anything related to smoking Toll of smoking in the United States.

It, once again, is your choice. QUIT SMOKING, OR USING TOBACCO PRODUCTS. Detox yourself back to good health, great health for what time you may have remaining. It can be done.

PS: This is not a trivial matter. I understand that the CVS Pharmacy discontinued retail sales of cigarettes and other tobacco related products. I applaud them. This is, at the least, a step in the right direction to reduce the consumption of tobacco. May everyone get on the Band Wagon, so to speak, so this type of addiction can be eliminated from the lives of those who are addicted and the life of those who are affected by those who are addicted. I have never been a smoker, but am one of those people affected by the smoking addiction of others, at home and in the work place. I am thankful for what little has been done to alleviate this problem – but there is yet, much more to still be done.

Fermented Foods – Test Kitchen

There is a lot of hype in regards to Probiotics, and a lot of new companies popping up that say we need them, over and over again. Were you aware that ‘probiotics’ are prevalent in FERMENTED FOODS?

Image result for picture of fermented foods

So what are FERMENTED FOODS? Fermented foods can be bought in the grocery store – or you can make them yourself. They include Kimchee a Korean and or Asian food, Indian Chutney, German Sauerkraut, Kombucha, Brine Pickles, Kefir, Relishes, Pastes and etc.

Fermented foods offer a variety of positive effects on health. “You are literally bathing your GI tract in healthy, food-related organisms,” says food research scientist Robert Hutkins, Ph.D., a professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

A study in the journal Gastorenterology says that fermented foods with live probiotics can also improve brain function. Because fermented foods are strong they should be eaten as condiments, and not consumed in large quantities. Too much or overdoing the intake of fermented foods might cause bloating, cramping and other digestion problems.

When eating fermented foods as a condiment the recommended amount would be a half-cup. You can start there and work it up to more as long as your body can handle probiotic cultured vegetables and liquids.

Fermented foods are not to be seen as a ‘medicine’. They should be seen, rather, as a fun food, delicious, easy, and as a healthy addition to a meal.

In an earlier Test Kitchen, I posted my Kimchee recipe. I also make my Sauerkraut.

SAUERKRAUT – so easy try it:    Image result for picture of fermented foods

Using a small head of Organic green cabbage – finely shred the whole head. Put in a bowl, add 1 Tbsp sea salt. Wash your hands and then mix the cabbage and salt by squeezing it and moving it around until the cabbage becomes limp and begins to release its juice. (can also use a wooden spoon for this process).

Pack the mixture into a clean 1 quart wide mouth Mason jar. Pack it down and add until it fills the jar. The cabbage should be submerged in the juice. Leave about 1 inch at the top. Cover with a clean piece of cheesecloth. I have a special lid with holes in it that I put on over the cheesecloth to hold it in place. Put it in a cool place. I put mine at the bottom of a lower cupboard. Leave it there for about 1 week, checking it but not opening it. The bubbles you see signal fermentation is taking place. It is ready to eat in 3-5 days, but keeps well in the refrigerator for several weeks. I have kept it for 2-3 month. I found that the longer I kept it the better it tasted.  It is up to you. You may like it so well you will eat it up quickly.

I found this recipe in a local newspaper over 40 years ago. I love it. It tastes much better than store-bought Sauerkraut. I also pickle red beets, okra, red cabbage, and other vegetables. Yogurt is also a source of probiotics.  I use it is as long as I make my own, and, I do not use cows milk. You can buy what is called ‘Yogurt Starter’ at any health food store. I have never made Kefir as I find it tedious to make.

  • Boost immune system
  • Maintain healthy Intestines
  • Strengthen bones (rich in calcium)
  • Weight loss
  • Improve Mental Health
  • Improve Digestion – and the list goes on.

Fermenting the food preserves the beneficial enzymes, Omega-3 fatty acids, the b-vitamins, and etc.

World of Wellville……

….in the New Year!

Image result for new year pics 2019                                                             FEATURING YOU!

As my Tag Line says – ‘WAKE UP TO A NEW YOU!’ New Year resolutions are made by most of us and yet they are seldom adhered to. We get busy and forget that we made them until sometimes it is almost too late.

In conversations I’ve had with many acquaintances over the past few weeks, they all wished they had kept their last years resolution or their resolution from years before that, to do something about getting healthier. Their intentions were on the right track, but their willingness to act, to change, to apply what was necessary to improve their health never happened.

Don’t let this be you in the NEW YEAR – 2019. Your life may depend on it.

I’ve already had many requests for topics to be discussed for my blog. I will do my best to address each and every one of them…and hope many of you will be inspired to become a NEW YOU!

May your new hopes and new wishes come to fruition in the year 2019!

The following information from my mentor and friend, Dr. Robert Morse, can be a good way to start, now – or later!
