Marijuana, Medical Marijuana, Hemp, Cannabis, CBD OIL. What are they? They all come, basically, from the same plant species.
The above mentioned terminology of products on the market, are in the news today, emerging on the level, as having health benefits. But do they? They are being considered by the media, the medical field, and etc., as ‘herbal health supplements’. But are they? I have talked to and interviewed many people about their views on the subjects to be discussed today. The result? Confusion! Most folks are confused about what they are, and how they have become to be so talked about…to the point of voting on them in order for the public to use them. Therefore, I will try to explain in simple terminology the what, the why and the how of these products so you can make your own decision whether they are for you, or good for your individual ailments.
MARIJUANA – what is it? It is described in most dictionaries, as coming from the cannabis sativa plant species, and is especially smoked or consumed as a psychoactive (mind-altering) drug. My Taber’s Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary adds – it comes “from leaves and flowers of the Indian hemp plant (another name for the cannabis sativa plant species).” It is “psychologically habituating but not habit-forming. Withdrawal of marijuana causes no such physical symptoms as opiate withdrawal does. The drug is considered to have no medical value.”
MEDICAL MARIJUANA– The Beginning of Legalization. In 1996, California first passed legislation legalizing medical marijuana. By the end of the decade, Alaska, Maine, Oregon, and Washington and then Colorado had followed suit, and today you can add many other states to the list. There are different types and strains of legalized marijuana/medical marijuana that I will not go into at this point of time. They include, indica, sativa, hybrid, recreational, etc. These are very ambiguous topics to discuss.
HEMP – what is it? Found on the computer – Hemp, or industrial hemp, typically found in the northern hemisphere, is a strain of the Cannabis sativa plant species that is grown specifically for the industrial uses of its derived products. It is one of the fastest growing plants and was one of the first plants to be spun into usable fiber 10,000 years ago. It can be refined into a variety of commercial items including paper, textiles, clothing, biodegradable plastics, paint, insulation, biofuel, food, and animal feed.
CANNABIS – According to Wikipedia, “Cannabis, also known as marijuana among other names, is a psychoactive drug from the Cannabis plant used for medical or recreational purposes. The main psychoactive part of cannabis is tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), one of 483 known compounds in the plant, including at least 65 other cannabinoids. Cannabis can be used by smoking, vaporizing, within food, or as an extract.” Scary in my book. Here in Florida, it is the Cannabis in the vaporizing form that parents and teachers are concerned about, because in the High Schools, vaping has grown to epidemic proportions among the High School students. The educators are saying the THC that is in the Cannabis vape liquid or oil, etc. destroys the brain cells. And, since a young persons brains are not fully developed at this point in their lives, the damage can become debilitating and permanent. Think about it folks! Do you want these kids becoming the leaders of our country in the future?
CBD OIL – What is it? This is the main topic of my discussion. CBD Oil has emerged as the alternative to marijuana usage, especially for medicinal purposes. Some of my clients have asked me about CBD Oil. Not really being that interested in it, their inquiries however, piqued my curiosity, so I have done extensive research on it.
What is CBD OIL? Cannabidiol (CBD) oil is made from strains of cannabis that contain low levels of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), which is what makes marijuana psychoactive. CBD oil is high in cannabinoids, a group of phytochemicals found in cannabis plants. I researched just about everything on the internet in regards to CBD oil, to include where it comes from, how it is extracted, what it is used for, etc., and who sells it. I am not going to discuss all of this, at this time. If you want to know more, google has all the answers. Right now, you just need to know that CBD Oil is not legal marijuana.
As for the above marijuana definition, I find the term marijuana psychoactive to be the key words you should be interested in – the compound ‘tetrahydrocannabinal’ (THC). Does this compound have anything to do with CBD oil, and how it is manufactured. Most manufacturers of CBD Oil claim that their products contains no THC. However, as I found that there are some companies who are selling CBD Oil manufactured with THC in it. It is the CBD oil products with the THC in it that you need to beware of.
Out of the clear blue sky one day, I received an email from a company wanting me to try CBD Oil. Where they got my name from I have no clue, except to think that if you are on the internet for any reason at all you have no privacy. Because of my curiosity I clicked on the site. Read all about it and ordered a FREE BOTTLE of CBD oil.
Being a senior and having aches and pains like the rest of the population, including the younger generation, I wanted to find out for myself how CBD Oil affects the body. I have used other natural healing oil products for a long time for my aches and pains, and wanted to compare them with the CBD oil. As well, having thought about writing a blog on CBD oil, I needed to find out for myself the pros and cons before telling you, my readers, about it. I never suggest to others to do something with, or take a supplement that I have not researched, or used myself after finding out that it is safe.
My bottle of CBD oil came in the mail in a plain manila envelope. Inside was just the bottle, with no instructions except for the shipping information slip. The only information was on the bottle. It had the milligrams as 250, the number of ounces as 1 fluid ounce, and it did say ZERO THC. Other information on the bottle said it is extracted from Hemp – USA grown (the best CBD oil according to research comes from Hemp). Also, on the bottle was the serving size, how to take it, and that the oil combination in the bottle was 99% MCT oil, and by summation, the CBD oil therefore, was 1%.
So, what is MCT oil? MCT oil is a CBD carrier oil. Any oil can be used as a carrier oil since all oils are fats and CBD oil being a fat soluble oil has to be mixed with another fat soluble oil to be effective and/or useful. For you who know about oils, all oil mixtures are mixed with a carrier oil. The main oil, having the health benefit, is added in smaller amounts because most oils when extracted and manufactured correctly are very strong oils. On my bottle it refers to the CBD oil as a CBD Isolate. What does that mean – isolate? CBD isolate vs. full-spectrum oil: A general comparison. A CBD isolate is exactly what it sounds like; pure, isolated CBD compound, all by itself and, in this case, with the THC removed.
So, there you have it. By now, you may be wondering if the CBD Oil I got worked. There is more info you need to know before I answer that. What I found is – CBD Oil comes in different strengths; with different directions about how to use it; how much to take; how to take it; how the different strengths act in regards to your body type, height, and weight; when to take it – morning or evening; how often to take it, etc. Most of the companies on the internet had this information printed on the label of their bottles of CBD Oil, or, in the information on the internet of their products.
With that being said, CBD oil is taken mostly for pain, as is the Medical Marijuana. The difference is the THC in Medical Marijuana and Recreational Marijuana. Again, as a reminder, CBD Oil can be and is sold with and without the THC compound in it.
I have a friend who used the Medical and Recreational Marijuana, He told me there is no difference in how they affect the body. He had fibromyalgia. He said, “the medical marijuana made him lose control of his actions and mental capabilities, much the same as the Recreational marijuana he smoked in the 1960’s.” He did not like that aspect and discontinued the use of the medical marijuana. He emphasized that “all Marijuana to include the MEDICAL MARIJUANA destroys the brain.“ He was unable to safely drive his car, or do any recreational activities such as golf, etc. and ended up staying in the house most of the time. He went back to using over-the-counter pain killers. At least, these enabled him to ‘have a life.’
As for the CBD Oil – you have to remember, CBD Oil as well as other pain-killers/medications only relieve the pain for short periods of time. They do not eliminate the cause of the pain. Chemically manufactured or natural, you can become addicted to them both with the difference being that the natural pain killers, usually, have no contraindications.
The results of my taking the CBD Oil – the effect on me was none. The instructions on the bottle said put 1 full dropper of the oil under the tongue and hold for 30 to 60 seconds before swallowing. Do this one time a day. I had to do it at least 3-4 times a day to feel any effects from it. I concluded the need for it that many times, was because it is the weakest strength – 250 mg. Something stronger would probably have lessened my need to use it more often.
The pain supplements I used prior to trying the CBD Oil I took in combination or singly, once a day, or sometimes twice a day (in the morning and in the evening). They are Black Cumin Seed Oil, Tumeric Oil, and Oregano Oil. I will be going back to using these.
During my research, I found that the cost of a bottle of CBD oil is figured out by the strength of the oil, and/or whether it has or has not got THC in it. It is pricey. Further information tells us that the benefits of CBD Oil, besides being related to pain relief, include: relief from, nausea, anxiety, depression, and other common ailments. I know other folks who take CBD Oil and these are some of their claims – especially the relief from anxiety, stress and depression. The cannabinoids in CBD Oil work with the cannabinoids that are naturally already in each of your bodies. It is called the cannabinoid system, the body’s largest neurotransmitter network, composed of messengers and receptors, which work to achieve balance, and creates endocannabinoid molecules. They affect and regulate the way other bodily systems operate, like the immune, nervous and gastrointestinal, reproductive, digestive system and more, do. Without the THC, the beneficial compounds that remain in the oil are not sacrificed.
Bottom line, do your own research. With all body’s not being equal, how you take it – strong or weak strength – will be different. Know your body and how it reacts to the supplements you put into it. There is no standard dosage that is right for everyone. Figuring out what you need will be a Trial and Error process. CBD oil can be purchased on line, at most health food stores and I read recently that it will soon be available at pharmacies such as CVS and even Walmart. If or when you buy it online, there is no proof of whether it is really CBD oil. Continuing my research, and I found that there are scams online, not only for CBD oil, but other products as well, where when you purchase the product, you are added to the companies AUTOMATIC SHIP list and all of a sudden that company or manufacturer is non existent. You are billed automatically, every month on your credit card without ever giving consent for the AUTOMATIC SHIP. This is prevalent with companies that say TRY OUR PRODUCT FREE, WITH ONLY A SHIPPING CHARGE. So buyers beware! The company’s online information does not tell you that you will be put on automatic ship, they usually say that if you wish to purchase their product in the future the price will be such and such.
SUMMARY: In my opinion, it is not a question whether marijuana, in any form, has medicinal value, it is more about figuring out how to optimize the use of the plant without it being harmful to the human body. More research on the use of Medical Marijuana, CBD Oil, Hemp or any product related to it has to be done in relation to it’s affect on the body, This is definitely a ‘must do.’
Draw your own conclusion, for your needs, according to your health and physical circumstances.
