What do you know about Papaya? I could go into a long discussion on this, but I will keep it short.
- Papaya is a tropical fruit. It is melon-like in shape from a long cucumber to a huge round or pear-shaped melon.
- When ripe the fruit is shades of yellow, orange or light green, and some may have a tinge of red coloring.
- Flavor? “When it is good it is very, very good…but when it is bad, it is horrid.” (quote from a poem I had to recite in Kindergarten). In other words it can be real sweet, fairly sweet and then bitter. Control of the flavor is something that no one seems to know how to do. I have been growing Papaya trees for many years here in Florida and have never experienced a bad tasting papaya.
- What is the papaya good for in terms of health maintenance? It is called the ‘Miracle fruit,’ due to the presence of an enzyme similar to pepsin which is called Papain. It aids in the disturbances of the digestive tract, bowel disorders, gastric ulcers, gastric fermentation and gastritis.
- It is the basis of many of the meat tenderizers and digestive products on the market. The ‘papain’ is not only in the fruit it is also in the leaves, flowers and stems of the plant. Pure ‘papain’ is often used in removing warts…in the natural world of healing.
- Eating papaya? I cut it and eat it as I do a cantaloupe, sprinkling it with lemon or lime juice.
- It is a fruit that has many seeds, which also can be eaten, but it is not recommended because the seed is very hot and can be harmful to your system.
- I take the seeds out and use them to grow my own trees.
- The fruit can also be used in smoothies, mixed with other fruit, or juiced.
- When cooking meat – small chunks of green papaya can be added, especially to roasts and the tenderizing quality of the papaya will make the meat so tender it will almost fall apart.
- I have never cooked papaya, but a green melon can be cooked like squash. Only the green or unripe papaya fruit can be cooked.
- There are many uses for papaya. You may want to research them for yourself.
The below article and link that I found goes into detail on some of the many other ways you can fix and eat not only the papaya but the seeds. Check it out. You may want to add PAPAYA to your list of HEALTH RELATED foods.
