Understanding Herbal Medicine

In my last blog I talked about the specifics of a few herbs – in general. However, I doubt that many readers really understand what ‘Herbal Medicine’ is. Here, I hope to help you all to understand ‘Herbal Medicine’ better. All cultures throughout history have used the healing effects of herbs to help treat health problems. Written documentation of ancient herbal practices in India, China, Egypt and even the American Indian, etc. go back 5000 years. The Greek physician Hippocrates and Galen, a Roman doctor gave us the principles for using herbal health treatments for centuries that became the basis of botanical medicine. Some of these healing principles are still being used today. Here in our culture, we are experiencing a revolution in herbal healing, better known as “Alternative Medicine” or “Alternative Therapies”. Unlike modern medications, which isolate chemical compounds, herbs contain properties that each nourish and heal, as well as work together for a wonderful healing experience. As I have mentioned before in my blogs, Herbal medicine aims to treat the cause of illness, not just the symptoms. The result is the body healing itself – not just part – but the whole person. You will experience a strong and NEW YOU!

What are the forms of Herbal Medicine?

  • Teas – using fresh or dried herbs mixed in water – taken internally.
  • Tinctures, Tonics – contain plant extracts added to alcohol or glycerin – taken internally.
  • Essential oils – distilled from plant materials some can be taken internally, but only if it is ‘directed to do so on the bottle’. Most oils are to be used externally, and can also be inhaled with the use of an diffuser to produce steam. They can also be added to baths.
  • Skin salves – contain dried herbs – external use only
  • Powdered – dried herbs – taken internally and used externally when mixed with water or salve to be used as a poultice.
  • Capsules – contain dried powdered extracts – to be taken internally.

Herbal medicine can be used to treat mild symptoms, and chronic (cause) complaints. It is very effective for preventing issues by strengthening the immune system to stimulate the body’s own healing mechanisms.

The effects of herbs, because the herbs contain different components, they produce different healing actions. The components include: alkaloids, saponins, bitters, glycosides, mucilage, vitamins, minerals, phenols, tannins and flavonoids to name a few. Herbs can be astringent, antiseptic, analgesic, antibacterial, antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, diuretic, expectorant, sedative, or digestive…they can stimulate immunity, and remove toxins from the blood by exerting specific actions on the different systems in the body. Herbs also have an effect on the mind, soothe tension, depression, fatigue and anxiety. They can be used as remedies for sleep, mood disorders, nervous issues, itchy skin and other skin disorders, kidney and bladder problems, colds and flu, infections, respiratory – lung and heart conditions, liver, thyroid, blood, and musculoskeletal pain, etc.

CONTRAINDICATIONS: As with all medications, there may be certain contraindications for herbal remedies – which in the case of our herbal formulas, are noted on the instructions for use. There are very few herbs that pregnant or nursing women can safely take. Consult a doctor before using herbal remedies when pregnant. Dosages for children will have to be adjusted according to age, weight, and overall health. Anyone with pre-existing conditions, such as kidney, heart, circulatory or liver problems should consult your physician. Those taking medications should be sure that herbs aren’t contraindicated.

When all else fails, many folks turn to herbal remedies – but you should do so only under the guidance of a Naturopathic Practitioner and/or a Certified Detox or Herbal Specialist.

Many of you may grow your own herbs, to be used mostly in cooking. If you wish to dry them, do so in a well-ventilated room, or dehydrate them. Store them in dark bottles with tight lids to protect them from moisture.
