The Pomegranate

Download Pomegranate Png Image HQ PNG Image | FreePNGImgThe pomegranate is an ancient fruit native to Persia, in what is now modern day Iran. Over the years, it became known as the fruit of royalty. It belongs to a family of plants that has only one genus and two species.

The name pomegranate –  pōmum “apple” and grānātum “seeded” derives from medieval latin – possibly stemming from the old French word for the fruit, pomme-grenade. The pomegranate was known in early English as “apple of Grenada.” It is known that pomegranate has been cultivated since 3500BC. For a more complete history of the pomegranate, check out POM Wonderful’s History of the Pomegranate.

The Romans declared it an apple. However, when we talk about growing pomegranate from seeds, we need to recognize that this fruit is actually a berry. Inside the hard rind are sections called locules. These locules are separated by a thin white, bitter-tasting membrane. Inside the locules are the arils, jewel-like pearls of sweetness, each carrying both juice and a seed which is the edible part of the fruit.

I LOVE POMEGRANATES. So I have decided to try to grow a tree.

There are several varieties of pomegranate, all of which do not need much attention and can be grown in various weather and geographical conditions. This is a plant that can easily be grown in big containers/pots making it suitable for terrace gardening, or in the ground.

I found so many different ways of growing pomegranate that it boggled my mind. I will try to make it simple because I want to grow one for my family. If you want to start it from seeds, here is basically where to start:

  • Choose a big-size, healthy pomegranate fruit.
  • Cut the fruit to get the seeds out.
  • Now, crush the seeds to remove all the juice and pulp.
  • After crushing, wash the seeds thoroughly and strain the water.
  • Now keep them aside in a semi-shaded area away from direct sunlight.
  • After 4 – 5 days, your seeds are ready to be germinated and sowed
  • To germinate the pomegranate seeds, put them in a small dish, cover them with warm water  and leave them there overnight. Check them until they start to sprout.
  • Another option for germinating your seeds is to place them inside of a damp coffee filter and then place the filter inside of a plastic bag, such as a Ziploc sandwich baggie. Place the bag somewhere warm and check the seeds every few days.
  • When the seeds start to sprout, transfer them to pots. Be sure the pot has good drainage.
  • If you are germinating the seeds in pots, you can plant several per pot, using regular potting soil. Water them thoroughly without flooding the pot. Then water them again when the soil feels dry. Put pot in semi-shaded place. After they sprout, you can remove some of the sprouts keeping only the strongest seedlings.
  • If you are using pots indoors – after they are growing good, place them wherever they can get the most sun.
  • OTHER OPTION: Put the seeds directly in the soil outdoors. Plant them at a depth of 5 millimetres (0.20 in). If planting outdoors, you only have to scatter the seeds over the soil and slightly push them down or cover them with a thin layer of more soil. Don’t worry about spacing at first. Later, you can remove seedlings so that only the strongest stay in the ground. If going from pot to ground outdoors – keep it away from direct sunlight for 2 days to avoid any transplant shock. Afterwards they can be in full sun for about 4 – 6 hours of the day. Flowering and fruiting can only be seen during the summer and spring seasons. The Pomegranate plant starts flowering and fruiting once it is 3 – 4 years old.

I will probably plant them in pots until they get of good size and then transfer them to the yard. They are considered a shrub, however, this picture looks more like a tree. Maybe pruning is what would keep it shrub size.

I live in Florida so what I am telling you pertains to warmer climates. If you live in a cold climate the directions may be different. You will have to research it.

Now for the maintenance.

  • Water newly-planted trees more often until established. Water pomegranates deeply during the heat of the summer.
  • Fertilize pomegranates just as they leaf out (around February) with a large covering of compost (preferred) or use an organic fertilizer 2-3 times per year.
  • For the first 3 years, it is recommended to shorten shoots to encourage a strong, sturdy plant.
  • Pruning pomegranate trees is not necessary. However, if desired you can prune pomegranates for size, to remove crossing branches and suckers, or to train against a wall or trellis.
  • The best time to prune pomegranate trees is after they have dropped all their leaves, just before they begin to leaf out in the spring.
  • Right Nutrients for Healthy Plant – in the beginning stage, pomegranate plants do not need any additional nutrients in the form of fertilizer. The pomegranate plant is not a heavy fertilizer consumer, but it is recommended to add a handful of organic compost once 20 – 30 days for healthy growth. During the flowering and fruiting period, NPK fertilizer should be added every 15 days for healthy fruit growth.

Things to remember:

  • The pomegranate plant has tender stems and branches. At an early stage external support should be provided for better plant structure.
  • If planted in a pot or container, the soil should be dug every month to develop better aeration and root system.
  • Pomegranate plants should be kept in full sunlight.
  • Excessive watering will cause rotted roots. Plants should be watered only once the topsoil is dried up.
  • During the time of flowering and fruiting, fertilizer should be added every 15 – 20 days.

This will be quite an experience. I was not aware when I decided to start this project that it would be 3-4 years before I could enjoy the fruit. If I have missed anything, and you are an experienced gardener you will probably know what I have missed and rectify it. If you are not an experienced gardener –  like me, you will need to do more research as I will be doing.

Apparently the mainstream news wants the COVID thing to be with us forever, since every time you open your computer that is just about all the headlines are about. I pay little attention to anything that is said, but I did run across a report authored by Natural Health 365 that I thought should be shared. I am paraphrasing and quoting some of what I think is vital information.

In “a recent study straight out of Ground Zero – the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) in Wuhan, China – has revealed that getting the COVID shot has a “consistent” effect on someone’s immune health.

What is the effect?  “It makes a person’s immune system more vulnerable.” (The study in question was published in October 2021 in Cell Discovery and conducted by Chinese researchers from WIV.)

“While the WIV study is small and includes only 11 participants, it did generate some alarming conclusions regarding COVID shot safety.  By assessing kidney function, blood work, and other metrics in the participants, the researchers determined that the shots clearly “mimicked an infection” with SARS-CoV-2 and led to “consistent alterations in gene expression of many different immune cell types.”

Natural Health’s research in their words: “Our study postulates that it is imperative to consider the potential long-term impact of vaccination to certain medical conditions or to general human health.”

It went on to suggest, “that after vaccination, at least by day 28, other than generation of neutralizing antibodies, people’s immune systems, including those of lymphocytes and monocytes, were perhaps in a more vulnerable state.”

This brought up an important question:

“If a growing amount of evidence suggests that COVID shots could plausibly cause long-term harm to immune health, particularly in people with chronic health conditions, isn’t it unethical to coerce American citizens into taking them since the majority of these citizens live with at least one chronic health issue?

That question is always on my mind when it comes to consulting with my clients. Because of this, the body of each of us reacts differently to any kind of injection of a foreign substance into the body – be it a vaccine, a prescription drug or just an ordinary over-the-counter medication. In my experience all of the vaccines, prescription drugs and over-the-counter drugs have contra indications or side effects. No citizen should be coerced into taking or using any of them. Doctors are aware and I find it appalling that there are many who force these healing methods onto their patients when they know they can be detrimental.

This is for informational and educational purposes only. The public needs to be aware of both sides of any health issue.

It is up to everyone to do their own research and make up their own minds as to what they want to do to get healthy and stay healthy. The following are more updated tips about things citizens of all countries may not be aware of.

  • MELATONIN: is a hormone synthesized in your pineal gland and several other organs, indeed in most cells, including human lung monocytes and macrophages, as it is actually synthesized in your mitochondria.

All though Melatonin is mainly known as a natural sleep inducer it has been discovered to have other important functions as well.

It has anticonvulsant and antiexotoxic properties, and is a potent antioxidant with the rare ability to enter your mitochondria, where it helps prevent mitochondrial impairment, energy failure, and the death of mitochondria damaged by oxidation. It also:

  • Boosts immune function
  • Helps recharge glutathione (and glutathione deficiency has been linked to COVID-19 severity)
  • May improve the treatment of certain bacterial diseases, including tuberculosis
  • Helps regulate gene expression via a series of enzymes

Over the past two years, scientific papers have shown that melatonin has emerged as a surprise weapon against COVID-19. It’s been shown to play a role in viral, bacterial, and fungal infections and as early as June 2020, researchers suggested it might be an important adjunct to COVID-19 treatment. It is also suggested that – melatonin attenuates several pathological features of COVID-19, to include the following:

  • Excessive oxidative stress and inflammation
  • Exaggerated immune response resulting in a cytokine storm
  • Acute lung injury
  • Acute respiratory distress syndrome

In October 2020, a scientific review, “Melatonin Potentials Against Viral Infections Including COVID-19: Current Evidence and New Findings,” summarized the mechanisms by which melatonin can protect against and ameliorate viral infections such as respiratory syncytial virus, viral hepatitis, viral myocarditis, Ebola, West Nile virus and dengue virus.

It was said that “patients who used melatonin as a supplement had, on average, a 28 percent lower risk of testing positive for SARS-CoV-2. Blacks who used melatonin were 52 percent less likely to test positive for the virus.”

The doses suggested when used against COVID are significantly higher than what you’d normally take to improve your sleep, but it was said that there does not appear to be any danger to these doses. As well, research has found no adverse effects for dosages ranging from 20 mg up to 100 mg. However, it is recommended that you start low, at 1 mg or less. Also, be sure to take melatonin at night, before bed. Rising melatonin levels are the reason you feel sleepy in the evening.  It is ill-advised to take it in the morning or during the day, when your natural level is (and should be) low.

I would like to introduce you to a method which may be new for many – called ‘FOOD COMBINING FOR HEALTH.’ This method was introduced to me through my training to become a detoxification specialist, by Dr. Robert Morse, N.D.

Improve your Digestion! Rules of Food Combining | Life at ...

What is the reason for  combining food properly? It is to make digestion easier and more efficient, as most protein foods require an acid digestive environment for proper digestion; whereas most carbohydrates digest properly in an alkaline environment. Therefore it is wise to eat foods that will require the same gastric juices for digestion. It’s called compatibility. This invariably will lead to better digestion and better health. “The simpler the meal the better you feel.”

The foods are separated into specific food groups –

  • Proteins; foods that contain a high percentage of protein in their makeup. these include nuts, seeds, dry beans, dry peas, peanuts; all flesh foods without the fat, eggs, cheese and, other dairy products which are not recommended; olives, and avocados.
  • Carbohydrates; are the starches and sugars.
  • Starches include all cereals, dry beans, dry peas, potatoes, pumpkin, yams, chestnuts, squash, corn, and coconuts. FYI coconuts are a starch/protein combination and also a saturated fat.
  • Sweet Fruits include bananas, dates, figs, raisins, prunes, persimmons, and dried fruits.
  • Sugars – natural in the food, and pure Maple Syrup and Pure Honey.
  • Mildly Starchy include carrots, rutabaga, beets, artichokes and parsnips.

Rules suggested to follow for Food Combining are listed as follows:

  1. Avoid eating carbohydrates with acid fruits.
  2. Avoid eating concentrated proteins with concentrated carbohydrates.
  3. Do not consume two concentrated proteins at the same meal –  such as nuts and cheese because the gastric acidity type and strength of timing of secretions of the different protein variations are not uniform, making them an incompatible combination.
  4. Do not consume fats with proteins. Since our need for concentrated fat is small and most protein foods already contain a good deal of fat, additional fat has an inhibiting effect on digestive secretions and lessens the amount and activity of pepsin and hydrochloric acid necessary for the digestion of protein.
  5. Use fat sparingly. The inhibiting effect on gastric secretion is counteracted and digestion proceeds normally when fats such as avocados or nuts are eaten with raw green vegetables. FYI – although avocados are not a high protein food, avocados contain more protein than milk. They are best used with a salad meal, and as well, combine well with sub-acid or acid fruits. They also combine well with lettuce, celery, potatoes or other starch foods, provided a green salad is included in the meal. Never combine avocados with nuts which are high in fat. ‘Fats other than nuts and avocados are not recommended for regular use.’
  6. Do not eat acid fruits with proteins. Citrus, tomatoes, pineapple, strawberries and other acid fruits should not be eaten with nuts, cheese, eggs or meat.
  7. Do not combine sweet fruits with proteins, starches or acid fruits. FYI sugars in sweet fruit should be free to leave the stomach within twenty minutes, and are apt to ferment if digestion is delayed by mixing with other foods. Sugar-starch combinations also cause problems. Sugar also has a marked inhibiting effect on the flow of natural gastric juices.
  8. Eat only one (1) concentrated starch at a meal. This rule is more important as a means of avoiding overeating starches than avoiding a bad combination. I see this rule being abused every time I go to a buffet type restaurant or to somebody’s house or church for a ‘pot luck’ dinner. Mildly starchy vegetables may be combined with more starchy vegetables, such as carrots and potatoes, but not in combination with foods such as grains and legumes.
  9. Acid fruits may be used with sub-acid fruits (best combined with less sweet sub-acid fruits). FYI – tomatoes should not be combined with sub-acid fruit nor with any other kind of fruit, and are best combined with a salad meal at which no starches are served. I see this rule being abused all the time as well.
  10. Sub-acid fruits may be used with sweet fruits of the sweeter variety. If you have poor digestion, bananas are best eaten alone. Otherwise, bananas combine pretty well with dates, raisins, grapes and other sweet fruit and with green leafy vegetables such as lettuce and celery. If you like or use dried fruits – use them sparingly, because the sugar concentration is naturally greater.
  11. Fruit and  Vegetables – The uncooked vegetable of lettuce and celery when combined with a fruit meal may enhance the digestion of the fruit.
  12. Salads combine very well with proteins or starches. FYI – green leafy vegetables combine well with most other foods, and should form the major part of one’s daily diet. The combination of lettuce and other green and non-starchy vegetable pass through the stomach rapidly unless delayed by oily dressing or foods that require a more thorough gastric digestion.
  13. DO NOT CONSUME MELLONS WITH ANY OTHER FOOD.  Melons are more than 90% liquid and leave the stomach quickly if not delayed and fermented by combining with other foods.
  14. Sprouts – are eaten best with grains. Great in place of lettuce on a sandwich or just eaten as a ‘sprout’ sandwich.
  15. Non- recommended foods include over ripe fruits and bitter vegetables.
  16. SPICES AND CONDIMENTS –  salt, pepper, vinegar, oils, garlic, radishes, mustard, cranberry sauce and all other condiments are irritants and should be avoided. This is a hard one.

WATER – contrary to what is being recommended today – Dr. Herbert Shelton recommends, “you should drink water only when thirsty. Dr. Shelton also recommends that you drink water at least 15 minutes before meals; 30 minutes after a fruit meal; 2 hours after a starch meal; and 4 hours after a protein meal. WHY? To avoid diluting the natural enzymes in your body by drinking with meals. In other words – the drinking of water with the meal dilutes the body’s natural acids with are needed for good digestion. This leads to heart burn, etc. (Under extenuating circumstances such as sports activities, more water is needed as the water in your body is released through perspiration. Also, depending on your health circumstances doctors may recommend that you drink more water per day.)

My doctor once told me that “only pure WATER is the true thirst quencher.” Other liquid drinks – coffee, tea, carbonated beverages, alcohol, juices, etc. are considered, ‘pleasure quenchers’ even though most are water based. Because of the additives, these liquids do not stop you from being thirsty. In fact, some of them make you want to drink more. They fill you up but they do not clear or clean the toxins from your body, which is what water does as it mixes with the natural body acids.

SUMMARY:  Folks do say, ‘I get along just fine with the way I eat and combine my food’. To that statement – my question is ‘if that is true why are there so many of you with esophagus, stomach, gut and bowel discomfort issues, gall bladder issues, kidney and liver failure issues and more?

Correct FOOD COMBINING = good nutritional balance within every internal organ/gland, etc. of the body. Hence, vitamin supplementation can be kept at a minimum. Thankfully, in spite of all the pandemic talk, health experts are finally admitting that ‘nutritional organic foods along with the correct supplementation builds the immune system, and will maintain the immune system which in turn – ‘leads to a healthy body not in need of ‘jab juice’ to survive.’

The first is health via the natural/holistic approach, and second health via the extreme allopathic approach. The powers that be have forcefully  managed to split the human race into two camps of belief – good versus evil. The  purpose of the WHO is to change the ethnicity of health. The choices are God’s method of natural healing as opposed to man’s method of scientifically altered healing. They no longer want you to have a choice.

Today when you google or use Wikipedia to look something up, it is up to you to discern whether the information is correct or has been altered.  An example, for your information, is the term “vaccine” which has a new definition? Webster’s Dictionary recently changed the “vaccine” definition from apreparation administered to produce or artificially increase immunity… toa preparation administered to stimulate the body’s immune response..” This alteration was made per the CDC…so it will fit into their continually changing health agenda.

My intention, by way of my blog, is to bring to my readers correct information regarding health and other issues. Then you can research and decide for yourself which path you wish to take in regards to your health.

  • FYI: Bad breath is a symptom of other more potentially serious health problems. It is caused by the growth of “bad bacteria” in your oral microbiome, and if left untreated, it can lead to cavities, gum disease, tonsil stones and other oral health issues. As well, these types of oral conditions are considered to be linked to other ailments such as heart disease and diabetes.
  • The ‘immune system’ is a hot topic currently, because of COVID. Let’s explore what affects the immune system? STRESS – shuts off the immune system and slows the blood flow. FEAR crushes the immune system. PESTICIDES and CHEMICALS used to protect food actually alters the food which impacts the immune system as well as the cardio vascular system making the blood system toxic. They also cause ‘brain edema.’ (Stephanie Seneff  PhD, Sr. Research Scientist at MIT) The immune system studies it’s invaders in order to protect your body. You cannot inject immunity into the body, immunity comes from within. GOD designed the immune system. It is very intricate and unique. It involves the lymph system which analyzes (B-cells), and studies the symptom or sickness cells, then leaves memory cells (T-cells) which the immune system uses to recognize the same illness again. Do your own research for more information.

WD40 – WHAT DO YOU KNOW? What does the WD stand for? It stands for Water Displacement. The product began as a research for a rust preventative solvent and degreaser to protect missile parts. It was created in 1953 by 3 technicians at the San Diego Rocket Chemical Company. Its name comes from the project that was to find a water displacement compound. They were successful on their 40th formulation; thus the name WD-40. It was bought in bulk by the Corvair Company to protect their atlas  missile parts.

What is WD40 good for. One of the original founders said ‘there is nothing in WD-40 that would hurt you…it is made from fish oil.’ The list of uses is forever long so I will share only a few:

  • Removes road tar and grime from cars.
  • Cleans and lubricates guitar strings.
  • Gives floors that ‘just waxed’ sheen without making it slippery. I haven’t tried it for this.
  • Removes lipstick stains.
  • Loosens stubborn zippers.
  • Untangles jewelry chains.
  • Removes stains from stainless steel sinks. Have to try this one.
  • Removes dirt and grime from the barbeque grill.
  • Removes tomato stains from clothing.
  • Keeps glass shower doors free of water spots.
  • Keeps scissors working smoothly.
  • Lubricates noisy door hinges.
  • Removes black scuff marks from the floor. It does work for this. I tried it.
  • Will remove bugs from your car – use before they eat away the paint finish.
  • Lubricates tracks in sticking home windows and sliding glass doors.
  • Lubricates and stops squeaks in electric fans, bicycle wheel sprockets, fan belts on washers and dryers.
  • Keeps rust from forming on saws and saw blades and other tools.
  • For you who live in high rise condos – KEEPS PIGEONS OFF THE BALCONY!
  • Removes all traces of duct tape.
  • Florida’s favorite: cleans and removes Love Bugs from grills and bumpers.
  • Takes the sting away from fire ant bites immediately and stops the itch.
  • Removes crayon from the walls. Spray on the mark and wipe with a clean cloth.
  • Spraying it on the distributor cap to displace the moisture will allow the car to start.
  • Last but not least: FOLKS EVEN SPRAY IT ON THEIR ARMS, HANDS, AND KNEES TO RELIEVE ARTHRITIS PAIN. I don’t have arthritis so I can’t prove this one.
  • REMEMBER – the basic ingredient is FISH OIL. The newer WD40 has silicone added. They also have other versions, which probably contain other additives.  As with most products from the olden days, they have to update them to compete with all the newer versions of similar products from other companies that are being manufactured today.

The list of uses is long. You may want to try some of them. I have, and surprisingly they did work.
